As of December 2021, community solar projects are already established in 39 states, and of these,  22 states have policies that actively support community solar initiatives. Historically, community solar has been most popular and accessible in three key states: Minnesota, Massachusetts, and New York. New York leads the nation in community solar operating capacity. Other states, such as Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, and Maryland, also expect substantial growth in community solar adoption. Community solar is gaining momentum as a viable solution to address solar PV access limitations faced by many U.S. customers. With ongoing policy support and increasing awareness, we can anticipate further growth and adoption across the country.
